Obviously you’re not all in New York City and some of you aren’t remotely involved in the Off Broadway theater. But long ago and far away in a time that was kind of Camelot because repro rights were enshrined… there was Perform-A-Thon.
And if you know, you know.
But if you don’t, let me tell you: Between 1995-2002, this miraculous day existed in which all the theater people you can imagine clustered in and around one room in an otherwise nondescript building in the Flatiron. Lifelong friendships were formed, art was made, creative collision was likely if not guaranteed. And did I mention, it lasted all day? Many of the artists I came up with and admired got their start here, all thanks to New Georges, a cohort of theater artists dedicated to supporting the female voice and gender equity. In their own words, New Georges advocates for an intergenerational ecosystem of exuberant theatrical minds, furthering fierce new works along with long-term wellbeing, expanding aesthetic boundaries and gender equity in tandem.
