How To Work With Me in 2025
Ramona at Midlife launched! Yay! And I’m settling back into my side gig as a writing teacher, coach and ghost-writer while setting up my next projects (two films, two plays, happy to discuss).
If you would like to work with me as a writing coach, teacher, ghost-writer or script consultant this year, here are a few options:
Join my next workshop! Five sessions, every Wednesday in April, in person in New York City. I’ve been teaching multi-genre generative writing workshops for over 25 years. We spend the first hour writing together with prompts and sharing thoughts, then each writer shares pages. I am also putting together a Zoom class for writers outside New York. DM me for info.
Work with me one-on-one as a writing coach or script consultant. I give notes on plays, screenplays, pilots, memoirs and pitch materials, and work with clients individually to help develop specific projects. I can work with writers at any stage of their process in just about any format. My special sauce is process. I help you listen to your story, find its innate structure and fall in love with it again. Think of it as midwifery for writers: I help you deliver
See above, but for indie film and theater production. I’ve been teaching a workshop lately called “How I Did It — and How You Can Too” meant to demystify the process of making a low budget indie film on your own. I have also worked with playwrights to set up readings and workshops of their works-in-progress.
Hire me to write your story in your voice. Or to outline your story in a way that you can pick up and write yourself (in your voice).
Finally, I’ve been teaching a workshop model based on the above “How I Did It - and You Can Too” for MFA and BFA film and theater writing programs. Bring me to your school as a speaker! We can screen Ramona at Midlife (or either of my shorts) and talk through how this writer gathered the skills to direct and produce her own indie film work. We’re in a time in which the center does not hold (see February’s inspiring interview with Naomi McDougall Jones) and it behooves indie creators to think about disrupting the existing models.
“Brooke Berman is the first name out of my mouth when someone asks me, "I want to write a play, but have no idea how to get started." She has a near magical ability to transmit the basic tools of playwriting in a fun, non-intimidating way and give you the confidence that you can not only start a play but also finish one. For the advanced writer who says, "I want to learn more about structure," I also say, study with Brooke. She explains different structures and how to deploy them with stunning clarity. For the writer who feels creatively blocked and needs to find the joy in writing again, Brooke is the shot of life you need. Her signature blend of gentle rigor will kick your butt in the most enjoyable way. To top it all off, she has one of the best laughs of all time. Studying with her is one of the best decisions of my life.”
-Emily Bohannon, Playwright
I LOVE working with Brooke. She intuitively understands me, my writing, where I want to go and what I want to do. I feel extremely supported in the daunting journey of writing a screenplay. Her insight and developmental notes are superb. She shares her extensive experience in the industry as a writer but also just as a person with enormous depth and understanding of the human experience. Her guidance is invaluable.
—Rachel Fleit, FilmmakerBrooke is a perfect, nurturing, inspiring and open inspiration. She is a superb teacher and a loving complex thinker.
